Synopsis: Have you heard of new quantum technologies but not sure how they may impact your life? Would you like to get a better understanding of quantum mechanics, photons, and how this knowledge could help us with improving data security in our communications networks? Then, this talk could be for you. No prior knowledge of quantum mechanics is required; just bring in a dose of scientific curiosity and enthusiasm, and the speaker will take you step by step on our journey towards quantum-secure communications networks.

As part of this event, you will also be able to chat one-on-one with over a dozen of early-stage researchers in the field, who can further explain the above concepts as well as their own research work to you, and potentially give you virtual lab tours.

Speaker: Mohsen Razavi is a Professor of Quantum Communications at the University of Leeds. He started his studies in an engineering degree, but was so intrigued by the beauty of quantum optics that in his PhD he switched gears towards quantum communications. He completed his thesis on long-distance quantum communications with neutral atoms at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2006. He then joined the University of Waterloo’s Institute for Quantum Computing, in Canada, before starting his academic career at the University of Leeds in 2009, where he has been working on various aspects of quantum secure communications. Professor Razavi has authored an  introductory book on Quantum Communications Networks, and has been involved in several national and international research projects. He is the lead coordinator for the EU-funded Innovative Training Network QCALL, whose aim is to bring quantum communications technologies closer to our daily lives.
